Skincare is the most important part of your beauty routine, because we all know amazing makeup comes with great skin. How distressing does makeup look when we have a
planet pimple on our face, awful right?! You can use the best products and cover everything but the texture is still there, that bump on your forehead is still the center of attention, or at least it seems like it is. This is why I never skip on my skin routine, I want to decrease my chances of breakouts as much as possible. Yes, it’s inevitable to control your skin with just products because there are so many factors that go into great skin; good genes, healthy eating, drinking lots of water, hormones, climate, etc. Most of these factors however ARE controllable, such as skincare.
Let me begin by describing my skin type, because there’s no point in taking my recommendations if we don’t have similar skin or similar skin problems.
I have dry skin and need lots of moisture and hydration to keep me from feeling like an alligator. Sometimes due to hormonal changes I get lots of texture that comes from underneath my skin, which I can’t really do anything about. They are little bumps scattered across my face and they usually go away once my hormones are back to being normal. I also don’t wear heavy makeup or makeup in general on a day-to-day basis, so my skin has time to breathe.
That being said lets jump into my skincare favorites and how I use these products in my everyday routine.
You guys know my ride or die makeup remover wipes are the Neutrogena ones (I buy a huge pack from Costco). I love these, they remove everything visible to the human eye! They are also soft so I can rub my face and not irritate it & they hold up really well, meaning they don’t rip. I also love the Bioderm Hydrabio remover anytime I run out of my wipes. For days where I am super lazy and don’t feel like washing my face (rare occasion) I like to go over my face with this product on a cotton pad to completely remove everything, because although my wipes do a great job they don’t take everything everything off (which is why I noted the wipes remove everything visible to the human eye lol). I love them because they take 90% of my makeup off, especially the tough stuff like glitter, but the Bioderm (and any cleanser) takes the remaining 10% off.
I have been using my FAB cleanser for years and it’s seriously my favorite. It takes all my makeup off (including eye makeup), it deep cleans, and it foams up so when I’m rubbing my face I actually feel the product working. I absolutely hate cleansers that don’t foam or are super thin and feel like nothing on your skin (i.e. milk or oil cleansers). The only downside to this cleanser is that it can leave your skin feeling dry which is why you absolutely need to moisturize after cleansing. I also use my Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser on days where I haven’t worn any makeup. The days that I do wear makeup, especially heavy makeup, I double cleanse. I’ll use my Kiehl’s cleanser first to take off all my makeup, then my FAB cleanser to deep clean; I learned this trick from a facialist. She said it’s really important to double cleanse because one layer takes off leftover makeup, that a makeup wipe neglects, and the next layer actually goes into your pores and cleans out any dirt or impurities.
I’m still on the market for a an exfoliator (comment suggestions below) since the ExfoliKate is what I’ve been using for quite some time. I apply a liberal amount of this anytime I feel like I need to freshen up and rejuvenate my face. It leaves my skin feeling soft and exfoliated but I feel like it only works if I apply a lot and leave it on for a few minutes.
I just finished my first jar of the Fresh Rose Face Cream and I love it. My longtime followers will know I used to swear by the Kiehl’s Rose Arctica and I still do, it’s an amazing moisturizer for dry skin (they also have a lightweight version that is said to be good for oily skin). Anything that includes rose is great for dry skin because of the many benefits, such as hydration, antiseptic qualities, anti-inflammatory properties, etc. This is why I have a pattern of using moisturizers that highlight Rose ingredients. I did however just purchase a new moisturizer that I’ve been using for a week now and I must say I’m really impressed. It is the Dr. Jart Water Fuse Hydro Gel, I’ll keep you guys updated with my thoughts once I’ve used it for a while.
When it comes to moisturizing during the day or moisturizing before makeup my go-to product is the Embryolisse cream. I have been using this product for years now and I don’t think I’ll ever stop. It’s one of the best moisturizers I’ve ever used, because it hydrates and leaves my skin feeling so incredibly soft. If any of you have a problem with your foundation looking patchy and dry apply this product underneath, I promise you it will make a world of a difference. I use this on all clients with dry skin and it works wonders. Just make sure to let it seep into the skin for a few minutes, I usually apply this cream when I begin working on the eyes so the product has about 30 minutes to really soak into the clients skin and hydrate just in time for foundation, but even 2-5 minutes will work.
I was sent this Rodial Stem Cell Magic Gel a few months back in a PR package and I usually decline skincare companies sending me any products because I don’t like messing around with my skin. Therefore very seldom will I approve for any skincare to be sent to me. But boy am I glad this magical product ended up in my PO box. Very rarely will you come across a product so great that you truly don’t have any words, and this is that product for me. I use a moisturizer every single night but nothing seals the deal as much as this baby. I use this religiously once a week to punch pure hydration into my skin. I feel like it might be a bit much to use on a nightly basis because this doubles as an overnight mask as well, but it’s great for an overnight pick-me-up once a week. My favorite part is that although it intensely hydrates, it’s still lightweight. This is a must have for dry skin!
Facial oils are another great way to moisturize, in fact this might be the best way according to some estheticians. Oils are known for absorbing better into your skin because of their consistency. They are known to penetrate deeper into the skin whereas cream products cannot go that far down. This is why exfoliating and cleansing your skin is so important, you need to clear your pores so that your skincare can penetrate deeper into your skin. I’m no skin specialist but I’ve learned a lot over the years and I use that knowledge to my advantage when it comes to skincare. The Nude Rescue Oil is one of my all time favorite beauty oils for hydration. Anytime I travel it does a number on my skin and I can always count on this rescue oil to truly rescue my skin after a flight. This is also the ONLY oil I use to mix in with my foundations. For some reason it’s the only oil compatible with every foundation I own to give me a dewier look without breaking apart. The Tatcha Camellia Oil is also a great one I use often, either on it’s own or on top of my moisturizer. I use both oils interchangeably.
We all get annoying breakouts, but how do we get rid of them quickly and effectively? My trick is a pimple cream that dries the sucker out. My favorite – the one from Mario Badescu.
Here’s how you use it:
“Do not shake the bottle (my girlfriend screwed that up for me lol). Before bed (after cleansing and toning), dip a cotton swab into the pink sediment at the bottom of the bottle. Dab directly on surface blemishes; do not rub in. Let dry and rinse off in the morning.”
For preventing and minimizing the appearance of breakouts I use tea tree oil cleaning pads from Trader Joes. It’s so easy because all you do is apply it on your problem areas where you tend to breakout (or on the actual breakout itself) and that’s it. These pads are a bit more mild than the potent oil itself which is why I like them more.
Before I used to apply the tea tree oil with a cotton pad and it would irritate and dry out my skin, it was a bit too strong. I use the pads as often as I can to prevent any breakouts, I don’t use them every night just because I personally don’t need to.
Lip balms are necessary to keep your lips hydrated and crack free! I have raved about the Kiehl’s Lip Balm for years, literally. I apply a thick layer almost every night and wake up with perfectly plump hydrated lips. As embarrassing as this is I am one of those weirdos who picks at their lips, I can literally peel my lip skin off in a matter of minutes…nervous habit I’m assuming? Whatever it is, this lip balm rescues me every time, it’s like my “Get Out of Jail Free” card. I know I can rely on this balm to hydrate and heal my skin anytime I pick at it. I’ve never checked what ingredients are featured in this magical product that actually helps in the healing process, but trust me when I say this is one of the best, if not THE best lip balm out there.
When it comes to hand creams I am a professional, or I should say my mother is. She has extremely dry hands and has tried very hand cream on the market. Hands are one of the first body parts where signs of age begin to appear and so taking care of them is crucial. After trying out what feels like hundreds of hand creams she has finally settled on one she loves and it’s from one of my favorite brands, L’Occitane. Their Intensive Hand Balm is her life saver, and if you read the reviews you’ll quickly become convinced as well. It’s her favorite because it’s really rich and lasts for hours, other hand creams would seep right into her skin and it would feel like she never even applied anything. As for me, I don’t have a big problem with dry hands but I do moisturize them often with any of my L’Occitane hand creams I have on hand.
If you’re wondering what I do to protect my hands, here are a few things:
- Never wash dishes without gloves. These are my favorite!
- Always use medical gloves when cleaning the house & even while cooking (I wash my hands a million times while I cook and when I wear medical gloves I can wash the medical gloves so that my hands are protected).
- Try not to use too much product with alcohol (i.e. sanitizers).
- Every night when I apply my moisturizer I rub whatever’s leftover on the back of my hands. I read somewhere that this is the best way to keep hands looking youthful (especially if you are applying anti-aging products).
Since we’re on the topic of body care I think shaving cream should be discussed. My biggest issue with shaving is getting razor bumps and irritated skin immediately after. Every time I use my husbands Gillette shaving cream, although I get a clean and close shave, my skin always ends up feeling dry and irritated. That is why this Trader Joes Moisturizing Cream Shave is hands down my favorite. It’s almost like applying moisturizer to your legs, that’s how lightweight it is. The best part…no razor bumps and soft skin. Once I get out of the shower I don’t even need to apply body cream that’s how great my skin feels, this is a must!
P.S. I don’t have a favorite body cream I just use whatever I can find in my drawers. I usually use coconut oil on my legs.
Another item that should be discussed is deodorant. If you are wondering why I even have a favorite deodorant that’s because I sweat like crazy! Drugstore deodorants are pure crap to someone like me, simply because they DO NOT work. I apply a underarm treatment I bought from Europe years ago that works wonders, but you cannot use too much of it. You can only use it I think once every two weeks. It’s from the brand Etiaxil and I always get the sensitive one because the regular one burns a little. Every time I apply this product I literally don’t sweat for weeks and once it starts wearing off I use my Malin + Goetz deodorant which is amazing! Also, when you apply the Etiaxil you shouldn’t go overboard because it is a strong treatment, apply a thin layer just before bed and keep your arms up until it completely dries. If you have a sweating problem like me this is going to be the best thing you ever use, I swear!
Masks are a big part of my skincare routine and I always switch it up. However, lately I have been loving this Fresh Rose Mask because it feels amazing on the skin. It’s hydrating, smells incredible, and brightens up my face, I also love that it’s infused with real rose petals. I use this mask every week! I also love all the sheet masks Sephora has to offer and I use them often as well (I don’t have a favorite, they are all amazing).
